Gweru City Council has dismissed social media reports that one of its ambulances was recently used to ferry opaque beer to a local beer outlet. A picture of an ambulance being loaded with opaque beer, commonly known as Super, went viral on social media platforms with the ambulance said to belong to Gweru City Council.

Some comments on the social media suggested the cash-strapped local authority could be hiring out ambulances in a desperate bid to improve revenue. Gweru Mayor Councillor Charles Chikozho yesterday said the picture being circulated was not that of one of the council’s ambulances.

“That is a hoax, the ambulance is not part of the council’s fleet, therefore, there is no need for the residents to be angry,” he said. “Nothing on the picture confirms that the vehicle belongs to the council’s fleet.”

Cllr Chikozho said the local authority’s financial position was not in dire straits to warrant desperate situations.

“Yes, the council is having financial challenges, but we can never resort to hiring ambulances to do such activities,” he said. “It will be a sign of desperation.”
