Guruve Rural District Council is using council coffers and contributions from the community to drill boreholes

Guruve Rural District Council this week started the sinking of six communal boreholes at a cost of $14 000 in a bid to provide safe drinking water. The process started on Tuesday and is expected to end next week before the rainy season intensifies.

In an interview yesterday, Guruve Rural District Council chief executive Mr Tinos Marisa said as of Tuesday, the local authority, through the assistance of the local community, had started drilling six boreholes in the area.

“We are drilling each borehole at a cost of about $1 200. The boreholes are being drilled across the district – at Guruve Prison, council offices at Shinje Growth Point, Ruyamuro Growth Point, Flame Lily Farm and Nyandoro Primary School,” he said.

Mr Marisa said the boreholes were being drilled using council coffers and contributions from the community.

“As council we have mobilised funds for the drilling of five boreholes and the community assisted us with the funds to drill another borehole. We applaud our community for always supporting us in developmental projects, which we carry out in our area. Their contribution will definitely go a long way in changing lives of many,” he said.

Mr Marisa said drilling the boreholes, which started on Tuesday, was expected to end next week.

“We started drilling yesterday (Tuesday) and we expect that by next week Wednesday, we will have completed the project. We are also using council machinery and workforce to do the drilling, so we expect everything to go as planned,” he said.

Meanwhile, the RDC has proposed a $1,5 million standstill budget for the year 2018 to ease burden on residents. Mr Marisa said the council had proposed a static budget in consideration of the economic situation in the country.

“Our performance for this year has not reached 100 percent and as a council, we thought of maintaining our budget at the same level,” he said.
