GUNNERS coach Kuda Masaraure said he was relieved to win the top-of-the-table clash against Flame Lilly in the World Navi Northern Region Division One league at the weekend. The former Premiership champions now have their fate in their hands after beating their closest rivals 1-0 in their backyard.

Jonathan Chitereki scored the all-important goal in the second half as they stretched their lead to four points.

“It’s a relief because they are now counting on us to be beaten by other teams. If they had beaten us, it was a turning point because they would be two points ahead of us,” said Masaraure.

“Now they are under pressure because they will be focusing us and the team they will be playing. We were confident we would beat them since we knew they were concentrating on us and not concentrating on their game. We knew the importance of the game and we knew we were in a race with them and we needed to beat them.”

Masaraure insists that his Gunners side is being helped by the prayers of their spiritual father, Prophet Walter Magaya, who is the team’s chief financier. Flame Lily coach Nesbert Saruchera said although they lost, there was still room to come back into the race with 10 games to go before the curtain comes down on the championship.

“Actually we played very well but conceded a stupid goal. The fairest result was supposed to be a draw but they scored from nothing. Maybe there was too much pressure on our guys.

“We created chances and they never created anything, so maybe, it was our fault that we gave them a silly goal.”
