Gun-toting backfires

A member of the neighbourhood watch committee in Tynwald is under investigation on allegations of firing shots at two men who were part of a group at a birthday celebration of a daughter-in-law of a senior Government official.
The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon at a place known as Speed Market in Tynwald South.

Reuben Honyani Thikathali (60) is still in custody and assisting police with investigations.

The two men who were missed by the shots, have been identified as Pride (27) and Staywell Chikafu (19).

Police sources yesterday confirmed receiving the report and said the matter was being handled by the CID Homicide section.

Police declined to identify the minister.

It is alleged that the daughter in-law was celebrating her 34th birthday with her friends in Tynwald when some of the people started racing and skidding with their vehicles — three kombis and a private car.

During the process one of the kombis was nearly hit from behind by a Vauxhall Vectra that was being driven by Thikathali’s son culminating in an altercation. The son reportedly phoned Thikathali who rushed to the scene and ordered the kombi driver to hand over the keys, but he refused.

This resulted in an altercation and Thikathali produced a Star pistol and fired one shot towards Pride and the other one towards Staywell.
The two shots missed them and Thikathali was later apprehended by members of the public and handed over to the police.

Investigations have so far revealed that the firearm is registered in his name and investigations are still continuing. He is likely to appear in court soon facing two counts of attempted murder.

No one was injured and the kombis belong to the minister’s daughter-in-law.
