Gumbo, Sibanda snubbed

Bulawayo Bureau
EXPELLED former Zanu-PF secretary for information Rugare Gumbo and erstwhile war veterans’ leader Jabulani Sibanda were yesterday snubbed at the wedding of the daughter of Central Committee member Cde Tshinga Dube after they were left out during introductions of dignitaries and distinguished guests.

Sibanda was making his first public appearance since his arrest last month on charges of insulting or undermining the authority of the President, a move that also saw him being expelled from Zanu-PF.

Gumbo and Sibanda were part of guests in the VIP guest section at the colourful wedding of Dube’s second born daughter Zwile Sicelo Dube, and Caesar Anele Mabhena at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair hall.

IN THE NEWS: RUGARE GUMBO

The man tasked to introduce dignitaries formally introduced Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Lin Lin and his wife; Economic Planning Minister, Simon Khaya Moyo and his wife, Zimbabwe’s ambassador to Kenya Kelebert Nkomani and former Midlands governor Cephas Msipa who was sitting next to Gumbo.

The Deputy Minister of Women Affairs and Community Development, Abigail Damasane, senior army officials and delegations from Botswana, South Africa, Canada and Zambia were also introduced.

Some guests in the VIP section tried to push the official to recognise Gumbo arguing that he had left out some important people while pointing to the disgraced former Zanu PF spokesperson, but he was adamant that anyone who was not introduced was not part of the VIPs.

“I’m sorry; I am only introducing people that are written on my list,” he said, waving the list in the air.

Gumbo was seen leaving shortly afterwards, while Sibanda followed proceedings with his wife.

Former Matabeleland governor Angeline Masuku, who lost in the central committee elections and was sitting at the VIP table, was also not introduced.

Gumbo was expelled from the party by the Central committee early this month during its 97th extraordinary session.

The expulsion followed his five year suspension for plotting against President Mugabe to pave way for former Vice President Joice Mujuru to take over.

Also present at the wedding was ZAPU president Dumiso Dabengwa as well as central committee member Dr Sikhanyiso Ndlovu and business people from Bulawayo and surrounding areas.

About 3,500 guests attended the glamorous wedding and Platform One, Outfit Band and Imvimbi Arts provided entertainment.

    Was it Prof Jonathan Moyo who advised his fellow politicians that outside the Zanu(PF) tent it can be ”cold out there”? Do people ever listen? No-o!

      Obviously this reporter does not understand the meaning of dignitaries,dignitaries are pple with high ranks or positions,cde Gumbo and Sibanda attended the weeding in their individual capacity, which explains why their names were not on the list.How can one be accused of snubbing the very pple he invited, and sat them at the vip section with these dignitaries?How come you didn,t say Dabengwa was snubbed since his name was also not on the list? This kind of reporting is pathetic.

      It represents a fall from grace. If it has no significance am sure you would not have bothered to comment on it.

      Uhuru;

      There is nothing childish about important issues like those of Gumbo and Sibanda who, not so long ago were some of the most senior and influential people in ZANU-PF and the war veterans association respectively, are now nonentity. “It is cold out there”!!

      That is newsworthy if you ask me and I think the reporter who covered this story should be commended for being observant and the editor for seeing this piece of news for what it really is – NEWSWORTHY..

      Shows no class on the part of the families of the newly-weds. Why invite people in the first place then if you do not want to accord them the respect that is due? If the invitation had preceded the gutting and they did not want them there, they could have withdrawn the invitation. Even if the emcee may have been overzealous, it was the responsibility of the families to make sure that this was corrected and by not doing anything it shows they were complicit. The issue is not with the people who were snubbed but with the families that invited them – completely classless to turn even a family occasion into politics.

          Your comment should be directed at Dare and not United. United is the one telling the Herald which articles to publish and which ones not to and I think that is wrong because every news item has followers and so we should have everything that the editors feels is newsworthy.

    It is understandable why no special mention was made of Gumbo and Sibanda. Tshinga Dube knew how the Herald and the powers-that-be are obsessed with Sibanda and Gumbo. What is important is that the two gentleman were invited to this very important occasion.

    • Zimbabwe United

      And the invited Gumbo did not stay to witness the wedding he had been invited to.

    • Makusakatara

      Cinhema;

      It becomes unimportant because if you are not introduced to the public when you highly expected it then you move to the bottom of the ladder – you fall in the same category as ordinary relatives and friends.

      The reasons for inviting the two could be varied but after being invited, it does not follow that they should be introduced as VIPs because they are not.
