AN elderly man was yesterday arraigned before the courts after he was found in possession of 43,4kg of mbanje worth $4 340 at his house in Southerton, Harare.

Silas John Karambakura (64) of No. 22 Gelfand Road, had a mbanje garden and he was also found in possession of two unlicensed guns.

Karambakura appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe charged with unlawful possession of mbanje, cultivation of mba je, failure to secure a firearm and failure to renew a firearm certificate.

He was remanded in custody to today for bail ruling

Prosecutor Ms Franscica Mukumbiri alleged that on October 5 police officers from the Crime Prevention Unit received information that Karambakura was in possession of mbanje at his house.

The court heard that the police officers went to Karambakura’s house and conducted a search in which they found a sack of dagga hidden in the fowl-run.

The State alleged that the dagga had a street value of $4 340.

The police also discovered six dagga plants in his garden, it is alleged.

It is the State’s case that the police went on to search Karambakura’s house and found two unsecured guns, a 303 rifle MK2 and a Tokarev pistol.

Allegations are that Karambakura failed to produce valid licenses for both guns.

He was subsequently arrested.
