Government will soon unveil more than 105 000 residential stands in Harare as part of measures to mitigate accommodation challenges in the capital, Zanu-PF secretary for Administration Cde Ignatius Chombo has said.

He said there was no need for people to occupy open spaces set aside for recreational facilities as Government had identified land for urban expansion.

Cde Chombo, who is also Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister, said this yesterday in Kuwadzana during a campaign rally to drum up support for Cde Betty Kaseke, who is the ruling party’s candidate in the June 10 by-election.

“We have a programme where there are 105 000 residential stands to be allocated to home-seekers. There is no need to fight over land and occupy open spaces. We have already identified land for that purpose,” said Cde Chombo to rousing applause.

He accused the MDC-T council of distributing land to housing co-operatives and individuals aligned to the opposition party at the expense of residents.

He said all people who had lived in council houses for more than 30 years should be allowed to buy them at nominal value and get title deeds. “If you have been religiously paying your rentals to council, there is no need for the MDC-T council to charge you huge amounts. They should charge you nominal amounts just to enable pegging and processing of title deeds,” said Cde Chombo.

The MDC-T-led council, he said, should stop disconnecting water supplies to defaulting residents but allow for a payment plan while residents continued to receive water.

He accused the opposition-led council of sitting on several applications from residents for market stalls and church stands, among others.

“In terms of the powers conferred by the law on me, I have accepted the applications and everyone who has made such applications should approach Harare City Council for action. I am allowed in terms of the law to intervene if an application is not responded to in three weeks as is the case with Harare City Council. Let it be known that I have accepted those applications as the responsible minister superintending over Harare City Council,” he said.

Turning to the elections, Cde Chombo said Zanu-PF would not be fooled by the MDC-T, which he said was participating in by-elections under the guise of independent candidates so that when they lost they would claim they never participated.

He commended Zanu-PF Harare province for its discipline after it accepted the Politburo’s decision to allow Cde Terrence Mukupe to stand in Harare East against the province’s preferred candidate, Cde Mavis Gumbo.

Earlier on Cde Chombo asked residents to submit their grievances and responded to them before delivering his address
