Bulawayo Bureau
THE Ministry of Health and Child Care will soon launch an internet-based tracker to monitor patients with infectious diseases countrywide. The system is expected to be rolled out at 348 health centres in the country.

According to the latest council minutes, the ministry wrote to the Bulawayo City Council notifying it of its intention to create a database on infectious diseases.

“The Ministry of Health and Child Care in Zimbabwe intends to implement an Electronic Patient Monitoring System (EPMS) which is a database management system that will help the ministry to track and monitor patients with infectious diseases countrywide,” read the ministry’s letter to council.

The ministry stated that in October last year, it contracted Liquid Telecom Zimbabwe through the United Nations Development Programme and Global Fund Project Management Unit (GFTAM) to install services for the electronic patient monitoring system.

“In preparation for the installation and implementation of the EPMS centralised database, the ministry with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Global Fund Project Management Unit (GFTAM) sought the services of competent firms to undertake the supply and installation of the required WAN and LAN infrastructure and internet or bandwidth provision services for 348 Ministry of Health and Child Care health centres in Zimbabwe,” said the Ministry.

According to the letter, the installation started last October and would be concluded in April 16 this year.

“In order to carry out the installation, personnel from Liquid Telecom Zimbabwe will be visiting the sites to carry out site surveys, installations and commissioning of the internet services,” wrote the ministry.

The city’s Health Services Department said it had no objections to the ministry’s request to install the EPMS.
