Government has no intention to arbitrarily grab assets from private investors and telecommunications companies should speedily strike an agreement on infrastructure sharing as the concept has huge benefits for stakeholders, a Cabinet Minister has said.

In his opening address at a stakeholders’ workshop in Harare yesterday, Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Minister Supa Mandiwanzira said allowing infrastructure sharing would unlock immeasurable opportunities and stimulate economic growth.

Minister Mandiwanzira’s comments come at a time stakeholders in the industry are carrying out consultations on the modalities of sharing infrastructure in line with global trends. “Let me make it clear that Government has no intention of grabbing anyone’s investment and anyone who thinks that we want to grab their assets is wrong,” Minister Mandiwanzira said. “We have more assets than anyone else in the industry.”

Minister Mandiwanzira said it was gratifying to note that most stakeholders were taking infrastructure sharing seriously and urged telecommunications companies to get involved in such a programme to significantly reduce their capital costs. “It has been done in other countries including the United States of America and in Europe and you can save up to 40 percent in costs,” he said.

Minister Mandiwanzira encouraged service providers to adopt a universal approach and include marginalised areas in their investment plans.
