Government has sent a condolence message to the Matandirotya family following the death of diplomat Mr Willard Matandirotya on Monday. Mr Matandirotya was buried in Chivhu on Wednesday.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announces with regret, the death of Mr Willard Maruva Matandirotya, who passed away on June 29 2015 at Dandaro Clinic, Borrowdale, Harare.

“The Minister of Foreign Affairs Simbarashe Mumbengegwi, the Secretary, Ambassador Joey Bimha and the entire staff in the ministry would like to express their deep and heartfelt condolences to Willard’s wife and children, as well as to the entire Matandirotya family on this very sad and untimely loss.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this difficult time. May his dear soul rest in peace.”

Mr Matandirotya was born on January 20 1963 in Chikomba District in Chivhu.

He graduated from the University of Zimbabwe with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1987.

He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on January 7, 1989 as an Administrative Officer after transferring from the Ministry of Education, Sport, Arts and Culture.

Mr Matandirotya served in various departments at the Ministry’s head office and rose through the ranks to the position of Principal Administrative Officer on April 1, 1998, a position he held at the time of his death.

He served as a diplomat first in India from 1999 to 2003 and in Malawi from 2007 to July 2012.

At the time of his death, Mr Matandirotya was a student at the National Defence College, where he was studying for a Masters of Science in International Studies degree.

He is survived by a wife and four children.
