The Government has applauded organisers of the Harare International Carnival for their efforts in bringing together local and international tourists for an entertainment event that has benefited the country in various ways.

Speaking at the Harare International Carnival Welcome Reception held at the Harare International Conference Centre on Thursday, Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa said the Government recognises the importance of the carnival in many aspects.

“Government applauds Zimbabwe Tourism Authority and its platinum sponsor, Big Time Strategic Group of South Africa, and other stakeholders for hosting this year’s carnival.

“The strategic partnership is a clear demonstration of Government’s commitment to private public partnerships as enunciated in the 10-point plan in 2015.

“I wish to applaud the spirit of cooperation and nationhood exhibited by all stakeholders in the organization of this rapturous national event,” said Vice President Mnangagwa.

He also noted the various benefits that the carnival brings to the country, adding that the participation of 26 countries at this year’s event would enhance tourism while the large numbers expected to grace the carnival would bring business to various sectors.

“The invaluable contribution, particularly from the tourism and hospitality sector towards hosting of foreign participants in the form of transport, accommodation and meals among other services is highly commendable.

“This platform promotes cultural exchange, regional integration and unity amongst our people as aptly captured in this year’s theme.

“As Government, we recognise the importance of international carnivals in fostering love and unity among nationalities, in leading to a greater awareness of rich heritage of the inherent values of different cultures, thereby contributing to the strengthening of peace and stability. Locally this helps us to market ‘Destination Zimbabwe’ to present and preserve the intangible cultural heritage of our beloved nation.”

This year’s carnival is running under the theme “One Love – Our Unity, Our Pride” and ZTA expects three million people to take part in the street parade that takes place today.

The street parade and carnival concert mark the climax of the carnival that began last weekend. The welcome reception was attended by various countries that are taking part at the carnival and it was spiced by performances from various local and foreign groups.
