CHAPMAN Golf Club yesterday hosted the inaugural Goromonzi High School Alumni Golf Day with several teams taking part. The format was the individual stableford and the event has several sponsors who include CBZ, Old Mutual, Mike Harris, BancABC, Barclays, ZB Bank and many other corporates. One of the country’s oldest and best schools is seeking to raise funds to construct an A-Level and ICT learning centre as the ones they are using cannot carry the current capacity of students.

One of the organising committee members, Kumbirai Katsande, said the initiative was good for the school. “Due to the tough economic environment, it has been difficult to secure funding to meet the building of the classes, hence the idea to host the fund-raising tournament,” he said.

“We agreed that we needed to be proactive to fund our own activities, which is why we came up with this idea to host this golf day. ‘’We believe if we are able to raise funds on our own, it would be easier for us to approach potential sponsors to support us on other specific needs when they arise.’’

Goromonzi High School caters for over 1 200 students and 240 are in A- Level. The school has no dedicated ICT class and historically A-Level learners doing arts and commercial subjects have shared classes with juniors and due to the high uptake of juniors.

This means there are no free classes, leaving the A-Levels without a dedicated learning centre. It is anticipated that the construction will commence in 2018 and will cost $1,3 million. The tournament attracted a number of participants from former Goromonzi students as well as the broader golfing community, who largely comprise corporate decision-makers.
