Hope you had a lovely weekend. The rains have started to fall. What a beautiful feeling.

The rains put a lot of smiles on many people’s faces, especially the farmers who were now wondering if this was going to be another spell of drought. Even the guys at the Met Department, particularly those who present the weather update on ZTV, could be seen wearing those happy faces that show that the nation should be happy.

The Lord promised to provide for us, and the rains are a sure sign of His promises and power.

Even if you are on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there, so it is better to wear out than to rust out.

Just like a film, action may not always bring happiness; but there is no happiness without action.

According to the late technology guru, Steve Jobs, “When you’re young, you look at television and think, there’s a conspiracy. The networks have conspired to dump us. But when you get a little older, you realise that’s not true. The networks are in business to give people exactly what they want.”

This then tells us that television plays a pivotal role in shaping people’s thinking.

This accorded many of us the television buffs a chance to relax at home and enjoy our favourite programmes as the rains pounded outside.

Some areas were, however, affected when the heavy rain led to power outages, which saw people failing to watch the match between Real Madrid and Barcelona.

DSTV, as usual, made sure that their viewers had value for their money when they broadcast the match, and in Zimbabwe, football lovers followed all the fun on screen while those who were expecting Barcelona to work the magic, almost “smashed” their television sets!

DSTV is also doing good by screening some series which in a way are keeping viewers glued to the screen as no one would want to miss a single episode or series.

Series, in their nature, are like one whole lifestyle and since they derive much of their content from real life issues, people easily relate to them being also beneficial as they model their lifestyles around them.

M-Net has its fair share of series like “Chicago Med” which is new on the screen, while “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” reality show has always been a favourite of many.

“Person of Interest” is likely to make television watching on M-Net interesting, so is “Last Ship” which will be in its new season.

“Empire” which made headlines months ago is no longer interesting, guess they are losing the plot.

I wish the ‘ugly’ scenes that characterised the “Mr Ugly” contest at a local bar in Harare at the weekend were screened live on TV just to give viewers an eyeful of the whole event which was said to be mired in controversy.

The previous title holder, William Masvinu, felt that he was robbed when he lost the title of being Zimbabwe’s ugliest man to another top contender.

Television viewers would have had a time of their life watching as the two “beasts” and their fans from the different camps heckled one another laying claim to being the ugliest of them all.

It is high time such events are screened live just to give television viewing a novel dimension to it and sometimes allow some of the contestants to talk live on air in a way that will give viewers a proper understanding of some of these events which are gradually gaining a huge following just like any other sport.

Still on the issue of rains, we expect our beloved broadcaster to give us updates, especially on the issue of the Kariba Dam that had been affected owing to the late coming of the rains.

So we know our position.

Last Sunday after a gruelling competition and a record breaking season with 79 million votes cast the winner of “Idols SA” Season 11 has been announced.

The grand finale took place at Carnival City where Karabo Mogane was crowned as the winner during a spectacular live show.

It was a musical feast as some of SA’s top artistes such as Judith Sephuma, MiCasa, Nakhane Toure, Emtee and DJ Citi Lyts and last year’s Idols winner, Vincent Bones performed to a sold-out audience.

Idols SA’s very own judge Somizi took to the stage and performed to Black Coffee’s, “We Dance Again”.

Twenty-four-year-old Karabo joined previous winners Vincent Bones, Heinz Winckler, Anke Pietrangeli, Karin Kortje, Jody Williams, Jason Hartman, Sasha-Lee Davids, Dave van Vuuren, Khaya Mthethwa and Musa Sukwene.

Along with being crowned the winner, Karabo also walked away with a prize package worth R1,2 million, a recording contract with Universal Music Africa and will also be in the audience at the spectacular live “American Idol” final in the US next year.

Toughest DStv Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup expected – live on DStv’s SuperSport.

The strong performances of countries affiliated to the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (in the ongoing 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers has the region’s football fans anticipating the toughest DStv Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup in ages.

The newly-branded tournament, now referred to as the DStv Senior Challenge Cup, kicks off this weekend in Ethiopia and will be broadcast live on SuperSport.

“We are excited that the Ethiopian football fan’s favourite, SuperSport, is covering yet another all African tournament, by Africans, for Africa,” said Gelila G. Michael, the General Manager of MultiChoice Ethiopia.

The World of Champions will use the tournament as a skills development platform for its Gaining Insight from Training (Gift) broadcasting programme graduates.

Five graduates from Gift Zambia will for the first time get to experience the thrill and intensity of producing a live football match when they join up with the multi-national crew responsible for producing the tournament.

SuperSport will also make available two commentary language options, kiSwahili and English, for all matches.

Eight of the 12 teams participating in this year’s edition have progressed to the second round of the World Cup Qualifiers.

They’ve provided shocks aplenty in the second round, Uganda thumping continental powerhouse Togo 4-0 on aggregate, Tanzania holding out two-time World Cup finalists Algeria to a 2-2 draw and Kenya beating a Cape Verde side ranked 93 places above them.

Reigning champions Kenya face a herculean task of defending their title after being drawn in the group of death, Group B, with neighbours Uganda, Burundi and Zanzibar.

The tournament will give birth to a new rivalry with neighbours Sudan and South Sudan set to face-off for the first time ever. The two are in Group C with Malawi and Djibouti.

Hosts Ethiopia, Tanzania, Rwanda and Somalia make up Group A.

Part of the tournament re-branding exercise includes sponsors DStv awarding all man of the matches in the knock-out rounds with a special prize.

“We will be awarding all man-of-the-match performances in the knock-out stages with an HD Zapper decoder,” explained Michael.

Till next week happy viewing.
