MALAWIAN midfielder Gerald Phiri, who provided the goal that breathed life into CAPS United’s challenge in the drawn match against bitter rivals Dynamos yesterday, has praised his teammates for their spirited fight in the second half of the Harare Derby at the National Sports Stadium yesterday.

Phiri scored for the Green Machine only four minutes after being thrown into the fray as a second-half substitute and immediately took the responsibility after his team won a free-kick just outside the penalty arc. The goal could not come sooner for CAPS United who were lagging behind in the first half following Murape Murape’s classic finish which had given Dynamos the upper-hand in the 26th minute. Phiri, whose trial stint at South Africa’s Supersport earlier this month was affected by injury, said his team showcased a spirited performance against their city arch-rivals. The Malawian said he was content with the 1-1 draw, although like most of his teammates, he had gone out with the hope of seeing Makepekepe steal the show following a good run of four consecutive wins which preceded the clash.
