Former Zimbabwe Farmers Union vice president Cde Wilfanos Mashingaidze has died. Cde Mashingaidze, who succumbed to cancer, was buried at his farm in Mt Darwin yesterday. His burial drew business executives, Zanu-PF Politburo members and Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development responsible for Livestock Cde Paddy Zhanda.

Speaking on behalf of Vice President Joice Mujuru, Mashonaland Central Minister of State for provincial affairs Advocate Martin Dinha said Mashingaidze played a pivotal role in farming and in the province.

“We lost an illustrious son of the soil who supported Government and the party at all costs. He was a member of the Mt Darwin West Development Association who worked well on projects which included the resuscitation of irrigation schemes.

“He played a role in the establishment of clinics scattered in every ward in Mt Darwin and tobacco production in the province. He was a farmer par excellence, whose works were admired by many,” VP Mujuru said.

Dep Min Zhanda said he worked well with Cde Mashingaidze during his tenure as Cottco chairman.
“We had a good working relationship since he was a farmer par excellence whom I knew well. He would come with farmers to my farm seeking knowledge and shared what he knew. I admired him because he was a straightforward person who was honest and hard-working.

“It is unfortunate we lost someone who had great knowledge in the farming sector at a time when the country is on the economic recovery path induced by Agriculture,” Dep Min Zhanda said. Cde Mashingaidze is survived by three wives and several children.
