THE Industrial Development Corporation has instructed its subsidiary Sunway City (Pvt) Ltd to focus on its core business of developing Sunway City into specialised industrial clusters for cost effective infrastructure and/or common service centres.IDC general manager Mike Ndudzo, who recently met with the Sunway City management, said they are concerned with the special attention being given to selling housing stands as opposed to the establishment of industrial clusters.

“Clearly housing is not the primary objective of establishing Sunway City and we should not lose sight of this,” he said.
Sunway (Pvt) Ltd has been battling to secure funding to service high-and medium-density stands.

Mr Ndudzo said while housing was part of the plan, it is supposed to feed into the grand plan of providing shelter for people who would be working in cluster industries operating in the park.

At least five companies including another IDC subsidiary Chemplex, brick manufacturer Vaka Africa and textile company Dongienic have already set up operations in the industrial park.

Sunway is supposed to develop the 1559-hectare land bank in Zimre park, 6km from Harare’s CBD, into a world class integrated residential, commercial, industrial, institutional and recreational parks so as to provide relevant infrastructural development to facilitate industrialisation and economic growth of Zimbabwe as well as regional integration and trade.

The main focus was on the construction of factory shells for beneficiation of local resources like cotton and minerals for both the local and export markets.

To this end, the industrial park is designed to compete with the best in the world in the provision of quality industrial factory shells supported by world class technology, efficient communication, road, air and rail systems as well as effective land use planning.

It is well-positioned with the Harare-Mutare railway line and roads passing through it while its close proximity to the Harare International Airport allows for easy access to air traffic.
