The fundraising dinner held over the weekend to celebrate the First Lady Amai Grace Mugabe’s 50th birthday at the First Family’s Borrowdale Brooke home raised more than $3 million in cash and kind. The Golden Jubilee celebrations were attended by various dignitaries, some from outside the country. Amai Mugabe turned 50 on July 23. The mega event was a joint celebration because Bellarmine Chatunga, the First Family’s last born son turned 18 in May.

Chairperson of the organising committee Mr Rodney Dangarembizi said yesterday that although he did not have the figures at hand, most of the contributions came from the private sector.

The First Lady announced at the event that proceeds would be distributed to various charitable organisations throughout the country at a function to be held at her Children’s Home in Mazowe tomorrow.

Mr Dangarembizi said it was up to the First Lady to decide how she would distribute the funds.

“Amai has passion for charity and the best gift we can give her is to raise funds for her,” he said. “How the money will be distributed will be up to the First Lady.”

More than 2 000 guests attended the celebrations, with some coming from as far away as Equatorial Guinea and Congo Brazzaville, and were represented at ministerial level.

Apart from running the children’s home in Mazowe, the First Lady is patron of several charities, among them Danhiko Trust, Aids Counselling Trust, Zimbabwe National Association for Mental Health and Musha Mukadzi Zimbabwe Armed Forces Trust.
