PREPARATIONS for the “hp lubes/Castrol Festival of Speed” motorsport extravaganza to be held at Donnybrook Raceway tomorrow reached a climax with the South African “Supadrift Series” drifting team arriving in Harare yesterday.

For the first time at Donnybrook Raceway, motor racing fans will be able to experience a whole range of motorsport disciplines including main circuit bike and car racing and 1/ 8th mile drag racing, with the main highlight being four sessions of drifting by the South African drifting pros all at one event.

To end the day, the popular H-town spinners will put on a spinning/burnouts show, defining at last for many racing fans the difference between the two highly exciting and entertaining disciplines of “drifting” and “spinning” often confused as being one and the same.

For the first time, four purpose-built drifting cars will be introducing the discipline of drifting to Zimbabwe ahead of plans for the start of Professional Drifting in Zimbabwe through the Sables Dragpro Club.

Tomorrow will also see some of the country’s top bikers in action and among them will be star female rider Tiffany Fisher, who will be joined by her rivals on the track Phil “Archie” Archenoul, Leslie Carlsson, Darryl Carlsson, Brian Westland, Theo da Fonseca, Grant Gower Smith, Bruce Elliot and Steve Holme.

Some fierce competition is expected in the motor vehicle section, which has also attracted the country’s top male and female drivers such as Darren Praji, Michael Raw, Terry Allberry, Shaun Kerwin, Patrick Patsanza, Kyle da Silva, Victor da Silva, Jason da Silva, Lazarus Murinda, Libor Jira, Raihaan Kerbelker, Mebs Kerbelker, Wellington Bwalya, Gwinyai Kaisi, Timothy Cox, Ryan Fernoughty, Wayne Nichole, Nigel Bunting-Gray, Leslie Denn, Susan Zevgolis and Kevin Allmark.

Complementing a back-to-back programme of racing, there will be even more to offer in the form of several exhibitors in the pit area including hp lubes/Castrol, Toyota Zimbabwe, Jialing, Stihl, Croco Motors, CFAO, Autobahn, Safeline, Kawasaki, Nemchem, Easytrack and Chloride as well as Classic Car, Biker and Karting Club Exhibitions.

Also in the pits, IwayAfrica will be offering racing fans wanting to share pictures of the day’s action with friends, free Wi-fi access on the day in return for applicants simply “liking” their Facebook page “IwayAfrica Zimbabwe” and Country Club Karts will be offering budding junior motorsport enthusiasts a taste of karting.

Come rain or sunshine, Donnybrook is the place to be this Sunday. Gates open at 9am and the day’s programme is scheduled to start at 9:45am with main circuit bikes and end after 5pm with spinning and burnouts.

Admission is $10 for adults on the day with children under 12 years getting in for free. There will be full and bar catering both in the pits and around the “S” bends; and jumping castles for the kids at the Toyota corner.

Tomorrow’s event comes hot on the heels of the 2015 FIM Africa Motocross of African Nations Championships which were successfully staged at the same venue last weekend and it attracted more than 2 000 spectators on the final day of action on Sunday.

Another full house is expected at Donnybrook Raceway for tomorrow’s Festival of Speed where spills and thrills will be the order of the day. Donnybrook Raceway is adjacent to Harare’s high-density suburb of Mabvuku and is accessible through Acturus Road after Chikurubi Maximum Prison or Mutare Road.
