A Mbare man who stabbed a security guard manning the Grain Marketing Board depot in Chitungwiza has been jailed for one-and-a-half years. The guard caught him stealing four tonnes of fertiliser worth $2 976.

Heaven Denga (37) of Mbare National pleaded guilty to unlawful entry in aggravating circumstances and theft charges when he appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Mrs Renika Dzikiti recently.

Mrs Dzikiti sentenced Denga to two- and-a-half years in jail before setting aside six months for five years.

The other six months were suspended on condition he reinstitutes GMB $2 976.

Prosecutor Mrs Ntombikayise Nleya proved that Denga and his accomplice, only identified as Biggie, who is still at large, hatched a plan to steal from the GMB Chitungwiza depot.

They went to the depot where they destroyed a security fence and gained entry.

The pair stole 38×50 kg of Nico Orgo and 54×50 kg of ZFC Compound D fertiliser and disappeared.

They sold the loot in Mbare and Cranborne.

Denga and Biggie pounced on the depot again, but were spotted by a security guard who alerted his colleagues.

The court heard that a security guard was stabbed by one of the thieves as they wrestled.

Denga was arrested and Biggie escaped.
