Black Opal Face of Zimbabwe pageant will crown its new queen on September 17 at an event that will be spiced up with top class entertainment from Jamaica’s Romain Virgo and many local acts. The pageant has been consistent over the past few years and queens have been ambassadors for the company’s products in addition to pursuing various projects in the modelling sector.Last year Cynthia Mafumhe was crowned BOFOZ winner and she will be handing over the crown to her successor at Glamis.

She pocketed $8 000 and got various hampers from sponsors of the event. As the queen counts down to the end of her reign, our reporter Naledi Sande (NS) spoke to Cynthia (CM) about her experiences as title-holder over the past year and below are excerpts of the interview:

NS: Your crown came with a good monetary reward. Are you free to share with our readers how you spent your $8 000?

CM: Yes. I invested in a car that made it easy for me to juggle my roles as BOFOZ 2015 and being a student at the same time. I also used some of it to fund my final year dissertation where I formulated an anti-acne skin care range including a facial wash, soap and wipes. I was studying for Bachelor of Pharmacy degree at University of Zimbabwe.

NS: What have you achieved during your term in office?

CM: I managed to assist diverse women with their cosmetic needs as far as the Black Opal brand is concerned during our campaigns and trips and those I just met on my own. Also I managed to complete a research project on the formulation of a cream to alleviate the effects of acne. Although this wasn’t necessarily part of my ambassadorial work, this work was inspired by my role as BOFOZ 2015.

NS: How has being BOFOZ 2015 helped you as an individual?

CM: I have learnt so much about what it means to be a brand ambassador. Even as I respond to this interview now I’m still learning. As a result of my experiences I’m more confident as a young lady and genuinely believe that I can achieve anything that I put my mind to.

NS: What are you doing as an individual to ensure that you keep a name in the industry?

CM: I have been networking extensively with different industry players, be it makeup artists, retailers or promoters. It is my hope that through these networks I am adding value to their work and developing my profile as well.

NS: How did you handle controversies associated with modelling such as sexual harassments?

CM: I have been fortunate enough not to encounter such incidents. I am a Christian at heart and I strive to remain focused on my goals and to always stick to my values no matter where I go.

NS: So you never got into any charitable work during your term in office?

CM: Right now I’m working with an orphanage in Gweru. A cheque will be presented to them on the day of BOFOZ 2016 finale.

NS: Why Gweru?

CM: I chose Gweru because it is my hometown. I plan on visiting them again before the finale, spend time with them, play educational games and note their diverse needs.

NS: Any advice to the incoming BOFOZ queen?

CM: I would say build on the momentum you will gain on your crowning night to lay the foundation to accomplish your future goals. Stay true to yourself and most importantly, enjoy this time as it is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

NS: Life after BOFOZ?

CM: I am waiting for my graduation at the University of Zimbabwe for now. My goal is to gain work experience as a pharmacist as I build on my passion for cosmetics.
