Today Zimbabwe joins the rest of the globe in commemorating the International Women’s Day (IWD). Celebrated on March 8, the day is an opportunity to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women in different countries around the globe. The first International Women’s Day was held in 1911 and since then thousands of events occur within governments, educational institutions, women’s groups, corporations and the media to celebrate the day.

This year the International theme is “Equality for women is progress for all! while our national theme is “Celebrating Women’s gains through Constitutional Provisions.”

This year’s commemorations are the first to be held under the new constitution which was approved in the referendum of 16 March 2013.So it is in accordance to this that the theme is a befitting one. The Zimbabwean constitution is commendable in the way it enforces respect for gender equality as one of the country’s founding values.
