A Canada-based engineer Andrew Mudzingwa yesterday donated 10 pieces of mbira instruments to Churchill Boys High School. Mudzingwa handed over the instruments to head of music department at the school Macceline Rubaya at Mbira Centre in Highlands.  Speaking at the handover Mudzingwa said there was need for the people to assist different schools with instruments.

“We don’t have to wait for the Government while we can do some of these things that can assist our former schools,” he said.
He added that the people in the Diaspora and individuals must learn to be supportive to the schools.

“When we grew up some of these things were not found in schools and the only way we can help these students is to support them with equipment.”
Mudzingwa said his wish was to make the initiative a national thing.

Rubaya said she was grateful to Mudzingwa and his family for the donation.
“We have Nhyunganyunga type of mbira at the school and we want to thank him for donating this type of mbira which we hope will enhance more skills to the students,” she said.

Her hope is that a number of students will join her department as they get more equipment.
“This is a milestone for our department and we have hope that more students will join us in playing mbira,” she said.

Albert Chimedza the director of the Mbira Centre thanked Mudzingwa for being supportive to the preservation of our culture.
“It is quite amazing that an individual based in Canada just decides to donate mbira.

“It gives us the courage to keep on working in preserving our culture,” he said.
He said the youth are the bearers of the country’s future and it is necessary for them to get the knowledge of our culture while they are at school.
