Farmers have been challenged to emulate the First Family in taking farming as a business and in the process, boost agricultural production.
Speaking at the awards giving ceremony for best small producer farmers by the Zimbabwe Agricultural Society (ZAS), guest of honour and Alpha Omega Dairy (Pvt) Limited group general manager, Mr Stanely Nhari, said some small-scale farmers were performing wonders by producing good yields.

Mr Nhari said the small farmers could scale greater heights if they emulated the achievements of Alpha Omega Dairy.

“Black farmers can equally compete with any farmer outside Zimbabwe. If you look at how the First Family has taken the business by producing seed products and producing various dairy products, I will urge all farmers to take farming seriously as business and not as a part time hobby.

“It is a fact that small producers grouped together contribute a higher percentage of food requirements for the country,” he said.

Mr Nhari said farmers should produce the type of products that were demanded by the health sector.

He said farmers must invest in modern farming technologies because the standards in which the First Family produce their products was highly commendable.

Southern Region Trading Company representative, Mr Laurence Sher, said farmers should doubled their effort during the forthcoming season.

“Next year we are improving on our prices. Farmers should increase their yields by transforming to modern technology and more land can be utilised resulting in Zimbabwe being an exporter of different food products around the world,” he said.

The best winner was Ms Nyasha Chamwazhika from Guruve who collected seven trophies and was given a three disc plough by Mr Sher to complement the tractor she won last week.

Fifteen farmers were given trophies for winning in various competitions.
