The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) in Mashonaland West Province held the second edition of Prisons Day commemorations with a call on society to embrace rehabilitated inmates. Minister of State for Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs Webster Shamu hailed ZPCS for the training programmes.

“I am very impressed with the number of programmes that not only ensure people have skills, but that they can contribute positively to country upon release,” he said.

Cde Shamu said rehabilitated offenders deserve a second chance. This comes as several inmates are being trained to grow tobacco in Banket with the assistance of the Tobacco Research Board (TRB). He called for many such partnerships to assist ZPCS to rehabilitate prisoners for the good of society.

“A person should not be treated as an animal simply because they have done wrong. He remains the same. Offenders should not be cast away, but be made to see the folly of their ways and adjust so that they integrate with society again,” said Cde Shamu.

Officer Commanding prisons in Mashonaland West Senior Assistant Commissioner George Denya hailed TRB for providing facilities and training in Banket for inmates.
