The Environmental Management Agency has sent a team to investigate a case in which Crest Breeders is accused of disposing carcasses of chickens at an open space on its farm in Waterfalls, Harare. EMA spokesperson Mr Steady Kangata said although the officers were still to brief him on the investigations disposing chicken or products of a similar nature in the open was an offence.

“We will take the necessary measures to stop this behaviour at once. We have sent a team to the farm to investigate the case. Any waste should be disposed through the Harare City Council,” he said.

Crest Breeders disposed carcasses of thousands of layers chicken on their farm in Waterfalls spawning a potential health disaster.

A Crest Breeders official who refused to be identified denied dumping the carcasses at an open space saying they had other methods of disposing such.

However workers on the farm confirmed that tractors carried the chicken and dumped them on the farm near Firle Sewer Works.

“The chickens are dying due to starvation and the company carries them in a tractor and dispose them in an open space on the farm,” said a worker.

Recently there were reports that condemned meat products meant for the Pomona dumpsite were being packed neatly and then loaded into the City of Harare garbage trucks.

The condemned meat products were then taken back to the market and sold to selected clientele outside the City of Harare’s Graniteside premises.

The delicacies, including sausages and meat pies, were being sold in Mbare among other surrounding areas, putting the lives of many low income earners surviving from buying the cheap meat at risk.

Some of the meat is also understood to be sold at public events like soccer matches and music shows.

There were fears that the chickens being dumped by Crest Breeders could also be sold to unsuspecting members of the public in nearby high density suburbs of Glen Norah and Glen View.

Efforts to get an official comment from Crest Breeders officials were fruitless as they were said to be in a meeting promising to get back to this reporter once the meeting was over.
