ADRIAN Dune of Mufakose 1 High clin-ched the Under-20 age group Inter-Zonal cross-country title at the University of Zimbabwe.
The competition was made up of three age groups — the Under-20, Under-18 and Under-16 featuring both boys and girls — and it attracted more than 60 schools, which were grouped into eight zones.
Dune clocked 32 minutes and 30 seconds in the 8km event to beat Dickson Musenje from Churchill who came second in 32min 40s.
Tafara High student John Johanesi finished in third place in 33min 10s.
In the girls’ Under-20 6km event Patience Munyai of Mukayi Girls High stopped the clock in 33mins 17s to clinch the title.
Rutendo Chinomona from Domboramwari came second in 35mins 12s and Sibusisiwe Chakanyuka from Mufakose 2 High settled for third place in 36mins 12s.
Munyaradzi Chinyai of Zengeza 3 walked away with the title in the Under-18 boys 8km event when he stopped the clock in 34mins 31s. Timothy Rukunyani of Mt Pleasant settled for second position in 34mins 41s with Job Jani of Mufakose 2 in third place in 35mins 12s. In the girls’ category, Consiper Sibanda from Zengeza 2 won the 6km event when she came first in 31mins 30s while Stella Mudzimiri of Dzivarasekwa 2 settled for second place in 31mins 45s.
Natasha Darare from Mabelreign Girls High settled for third place in 31mins 54s.
In the boys’ Under-16 6km event Douglas Kamupfundi from Tafara 1 High was the first to cross the line in 26mins 12s and Simba Ngandu from Seke 3 came second in 26mns 54s and Jonathan Manda from Zengeza 4 was third in 26mins 56s.
In the girls’ category Tafara 1 High’s Tatenda Mudara was the first to cross the line in 20mins 6s to beat Chipo Manuel from Mufakose 2 who came second in 20mins 8s.
Anna Muchemwa from Domboramwari finished in third place in 20mins 42s.
The competition was used to select a 50-member team that will represent Harare province in the national cross-country championships on February 18 in Bindura.
Harare provincial head in charge, Apinos Chiwara, was happy with the level of competition.
“This was our fist event and the competition was okay, it all went well. We are meeting the team at Queen Elizabeth this afternoon (yesterday). Some provinces will be holding their competitions on the 11th of February and it gives us enough time to prepare for the event,” said Chiwara.
