A POLICEMAN based at Mtapa Police Station in Gweru is recovering in hospital after he was attacked by imbibers while drinking beer clad in apostolic sect regalia. Constable Albert Mombeyarara, who is from the Mwazha Apostolic sect, allegedly went to a night spot in Mambo suburb clad in his sect gown and started drinking beer. The police officer confirmed the attack, but denied that he was putting on his church gown when the incident occurred.

“I am a member of an apostolic sect, but was not in a gown when I was attacked. The matter is being handled by the police, get in touch with my bosses,” he said before hanging up the phone. He could neither deny nor confirm drinking beer when the incident occurred. Sources said after attending First Lady Dr Grace Mugabe’s “Super Sunday” rally at Rufaro Stadium last week, Mombeyarara is alleged to have not removed his church regalia for several days and went on drinking binges with it.

“Other imbibers who were in the bar started accusing Mombeyarara of acting blasphemously and assaulted him while dragging him out of the bar. He was also stabbed in the face and when he collapsed, others took advantage and searched him,” said a witness, Mr Peter Masocha.

“All hell broke loose when he then tried to go for a beer drink while in the sacred gown,” said another source. Acting police spokesperson for Midlands Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende could not be drawn to comment yesterday.
