THIS Sunday will see Zimbabwe’s premier motorsport of drag racing back at Donnybrook in Harare for another round of brutal quarter-mile car and bike racing action. The first event held on May 21 saw 67 competitors battling it out on the track in front of the 2 500-plus strong crowd that thronged the venue. Large crowds are a familiar sight at drag racing events at Donnybrook where hundreds of races take place through the course of the day, the highlight of the day being the Elimination Event where competitors face-off in a knock-out style fashion one on one.

Racing fans cheer on their favourite competitors and vehicle brands and crowd for photo opportunities with the drivers and riders wherever possible.

Whilst there can only be one overall winner in the elimination motor vehicle event and eliminator motorcycle event respectively, the hype and build up to declare the top car and top bike of the day creates an atmosphere that is both festive and intense, with some fans taking the races even more seriously than the competitors themselves.

Recent re-surfacing of the Dragstrip saw many cars and bikes recording personal best times with the better and more grippy surface, reduced wheel spin particularly helping the more powerful modified cars and bikes. Many competitors have taken the sport to a professional level, and phrases like “racing slicks, turbochargers, ethanol fuel and nitrous oxide” are common talk amongst competitors and racing fans alike.

More action is guaranteed this week and competitors have little time remaining to tweak their machines for the upcoming event.
