THE Government will descend heavily on school headmasters who send away children for not paying fees, Masvingo provincial education director, Mr Zadius Chitiga has said. Mr Chitiga said Government’s directive over fees still stood and no one was expected to violate that. He also reiterated that no school fees increments had been approved for the term. “The Ministry’s position has not yet changed. We do not expect any school to send away a pupil because her or his parents have not yet paid fees. The school should deal directly with parents or guardians who are their custodians,” Mr Chitiga said.

He emphasised the need for pupils to work on their school work as some of them would be writing their final examinations.

“I hope pupils in Masvingo were studying during the holiday in preparation for the forthcoming examinations. It is our hope that they are working hard.

“I also warn school heads who may want to arbitrary increase school fees at this time of the year that the Ministry will not hesitate to deal with them.”

He added: “I also implore the pupils to work hard as some are having their final examinations this term.”

Mr Chitiga said the province has always remained one of the best in terms of examination results.

“We want to maintain that record and I would like to wish all learners good luck,” he said

Schools opened for the third term yesterday amid Government’s approval for the hiring of more than 2 300 trained teachers to beef up staff at the learning institutions.

A number of teachers’ college graduates had not been deployed due to lack of resources in the fiscus.
