DONGO Sawmill finally exorcised the ghost that had haunted them at home after grabbing a late winner in this Castle Lager Premiership tie at Vengere yesterday.

This was Dongo’s first victory at home and only their second in the opening 15 matches of the season.

Dongo have been finding the going tough at Vengere, having suffered seven defeats.

But they finally broke the jinx in the 87th minute through a Physwell Madhanzi strike.

Madhanzi, who had wasted what had appeared to be the best chance of the afternoon in the 85th minute, was quick to make amends when he capitalised on a defensive boob by Whawha defender Gift Kwaramba to slot home the decisive goal.

The win, apart from cheering the spirits of the home fans, also took pressure off head coach Shadreck “Father” Mugurasave and his technical team.

Dongo assistant coach, Dananai Chinowawa, dedicated the victory to the home fans for their unwavering support.

“It is a huge relief. We had gone for a lot of home matches without a win but the fans kept coming in huge numbers to support the boys.

“We dedicate this victory to the fans because they have been there for the boys when the chips were down.

“We also want to congratulate the boys for playing according to instructions. We hope this result will bring confidence ahead of our back-to-back clash against the prison wardens,” said Chinowawa.

He said they would be active on the market and add more players for the team to avoid relegation.

Whawha coach, Lloyd “Samaita” Mutasa, conceded defeat and blamed his side’s failure to convert chances for their loss.

“We lost the match because we did not create chances. We failed to score and we lost,” said Mutasa.

Despite the win, Dongo are still stuck at the bottom of the log with 10 points from 15 games.

The hosts could have opened the scoring as early as the fifth minute but Lawrence Masibera’s weak effort was cleared off the line by Roy Useni.

Moments later, man-of-the-match, Last Jesi, had a goal-bound effort parried to safety by Whawha goalie Polite Sibanda.

Early in the second half Jesi worked his way past three Whawha defenders but instead of shooting at an exposed Sibanda, chose to pass to Madhanzi who was in an offside position. The home side kept pouring forward with Masibhera hitting the cross bar after the hour.
