ZIMBABWEAN stand-up comedy, which has long been a dish for those fun-lovers who go out at night, is set to witness another rib-cracking affair. Self-styled “doctor” of comedy Doc Vikela, real name Victor Mpofu, will tonight launch his DVD entitled, “Trust Me, I am a Doctor”, at the Book Café from 1730 to 1900hrs. He will also launch his album at the same event.

“Zimbabweans haven’t had the opportunity to feel local stand-up comedy, so this DVD is meant to ensure no one is excluded from this potpourri of joy and laughter. Through this DVD comedy is coming to people in the comfort of their own homes, and behold, the Doc Vikela brand has just quenched their thirst,” Doc Vikela said.

Doc Vikela is of the opinion that to really take root in the country, stand-up comedy should be accessed by everyone, hence the idea of DVDs. The DVD contains shots of a show Doc Vikela performed at Alliance Francaise in August.

“The DVD is based on the one-man comedy show I did at the Alliance Francaise on 7 August this year. The Alliance show was a really good one, and we decided that it was too good to just let it be forgotten. So we thought we should immortalise it, and we have packaged it for our fans to enjoy,” he said.
Doc Vikela says that the DVD, which costs US$2 a copy, is an early Christmas present for comedy lovers.

“I urge fans to come in their numbers and get a copy of the DVD because it is a real powder keg, laughter is guaranteed from start to finish. This is an early Christmas present from the Doctor,” he said.

The DVD launch is in partnership with Savannah Dry, Chido Advertising, Cheukwa Designs, 263 Africa TV and Pamberi Trust. To curb piracy there is only one distributor of the DVDs, 263 Africa TV.

Doc Vikela will also unveil his website tonight.
He said the website would be a platform to interact with his fans and give them updates on his productions. It will also be a way to reach out to the international market. Doc Vikela said he would unveil full information about the website tonight.
