scriptures and everyday life, he was able to demonstrate how spiritual power sources (the Lord and Satan, good and bad) can influence people’s lives depending on their individual choices.
As a seed farmer Pastor Chitsinde illustrated the importance of ensuring that seed is not corrupted.
One of the terrible influences that can corrupt seed that he spoke about was homosexuality. This was one of the few messages which did not treat homosexuality as a sacred cow, or which was couched in politically correct terms to please listeners, while leading them to damnation. The late Pastor Chiweshe was also good at that.
As Rev Chitsinde spoke last Sunday, so did Cardinal Keith O’Brien who is not only the President of the Bishop’s Conference of Scotland, but also Britain’s most senior Catholic clerics.
This week, The Herald carried two pieces on Cardinal O’Brien’s position on same sex marriages and homosexuality in general.
He wrote an opinion piece in the Sunday Telegraph and endorsed his stance against homosexuality on the BBC’s Radio 4.
Cardinal O’Brien wrote in part, “As an institution, marriage long predates the existence of any state or government. It was not created by governments and should not be changed by them. Instead, recognising the innumerable benefits which marriage brings to society, they should act to protect and uphold marriage, not attack or dismantle it . . .”
Those familiar with the Catholic Church understand that a Cardinal is one of the highest ranks before one becomes the Pope (leader of the Catholic Church). Cardinals were traditionally seen as the “Princes of the Church” who assist the Pope in church governance, just like elders in other denominations.
The singular role that Cardinals play is electing a new Pope when the position falls vacant.
It remains to be seen how a position from such a powerful opinion leader will affect the discourse on homosexuality, worldwide.
But notwithstanding that the issue will continue to be treated as pop culture, the Word of God on the issue will never change (Romans 1:18-32; 1 Corinthians 6:9-11; 1 Timothy 1:9-11).
An example is 1 Corinthians 6:9-11: “Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” (NB: The words “men who have sex with men” translate two Greek words that refer to the passive and active participants in homosexual acts.)

“Let the sea resound, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it. Let the rivers clap their hands, let the mountains sing together for joy; let them sing before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples with equity.” (Psalm 98:7-9)
