The Office of the President and Cabinet, in conjunction with various disabled people’s organisations, will hold a national disability expo in July to raise awareness on disability issues.

The expo, which is expected to attract people from most of the provinces, will be held from July 29 to 31 at Bulawayo City Hall.

Advisor on National Disability issues, Dr Felix Muchemwa said they realised the need to showcase various abilities towards poverty eradication and transforming people to believe that “disability does not mean inability”.

“The expo is mainly focused on encouraging dialogue between disabled people’s organisations and disabled related entities, to showcase the various abilities of persons

with disabilities and advocate self-representation of persons with disabilities at all legislative and decision-making levels,” said Dr Muchemwa.

“We hope this year we can also bring in not only the disability community, but organisations that can assist with sustainable projects which can assist people with disabilities to be able to fend for themselves.”

The theme for this year’s expo will be: “Empowerment through self representation, nothing for us without us for successful livelihoods for persons with disability”.

Dr Muchemwa said for the past two years, the expo has been held in Harare and they thought of having it in a different location.
