Police officers have been urged to continue working as a team and to develop good communication skills when discharging their duties. Speaking at the Commissioner-General of Police’s sports gala awards ceremony this week, Deputy Commissioner-General Levie Sibanda said the force would continue supporting sporting activities which are integral to police work.

“Police officers work as a team and when one engages in sporting activities, one develops interactive skills, communication skills and collaborative skills, among others,” he said.

Deputy Comm-Gen Sibanda said sporting activities fostered patriotism as participants needed the spirit of oneness in order to achieve a common objective.

“It is the oneness that provides identity,” he said.

“It is identity that fosters the spirit of patriotism. At national level we see the scope for sporting activities in contributing to the national economic blue print, the Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio Economic Transformation (ZimAsset).

“I say this because, sport when properly and efficiently managed, promotes tourism as international competitors are drawn to well organised sporting events. It is, therefore, imperative that the importance of sport not be underplayed.”

Deputy Comm-Gen Sibanda said the force was now acknowledged and respected as a formidable sporting powerhouse in the country, the region and internationally.

He said the force had a pool of sports persons who had traversed the world and left their mark in various sporting disciplines, especially athletics.

Deputy Comm-Gen Sibanda said this was as a result of the efficient administration of sporting activities that had seen their athletes positively respond and thrive.

“I want to urge our sports persons to continue the good work and in particular remembering their responsibilities as inspirational role models for upcoming participants,” he said.

Deputy Comm-Gen said excelling participants were being selected for the upcoming Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Co-operation (SARPCCO) Games scheduled from July 22 to August 2 this year in Swaziland.

At least 3 941 policemen drawn from the force’s 17 provinces participated in the gala and of these 2 413 were men, while 1 528 were women.

Zimbabwe has been doing well at the SARPCCO games, wining medals in various fields and sometimes becoming the overall winners of the event as a country.
