Zanu-PF Manicaland Women’s League provincial chairperson, Cde Estery Madhuku, yesterday challenged her colleagues to desist from creating parallel structures within the party’s women’s wing.

She described such actions as tantamount to undermining President Mugabe’s authority.

Addressing women gathered for the Manicaland Zanu-PF Women’s League chicken rearing programme being sponsored by First Lady Amai Grace Mugabe at Hot Springs, Chimanimani District, Cde Madhuku said the Women’s League should work hand in glove with members of the National Assembly.

“Tell your MPs when they err and not just work to chuck them out,” she said. “You also need to advise aspiring MPs to go and try their luck in constituencies such as Mutasa Central, Mutare Central and Musikavanhu where the party lost seats to the opposition and not where there is a leader from the party.”

The training was attended by women from districts such as Chipinge, Chimanimani, Zimunya-Marange and Buhera, while war veterans, war collaborators and members of the civil service were also present.

A Central Committee member and legislator for Chimanimani West and East (women’s quota), Cde Esther Chikuni, also attended.

Cde Madhuku challenged women to show their appreciation for the programme, which is being rolled out by the First Lady, Dr Amai Grace Mugabe, by being honest and avoiding corrupt practices that would deprive others of the chance to improve their socio-economic situations.

Under the project, the women are set to receive 3 000 chickens for an “own and pass” arrangement in which recipients of the first batch keep them and sell, then deduct an amount that is enough to buy a batch of 100 chicks and give to the next group that is also expected to do the same thing.

“Let us be honest and avoid nepotism tendencies in which only people that are connected will benefit from the programme, while those that do not know prominent figures remain poor,” said Cde Madhuku.

“The project should benefit everyone from the province, district and ward right down to the cell level, so that Government’s Zim-Asset is upheld to benefit all.”

In an interview on the sidelines of the training, Cde Chikuni stressed the need for beneficiaries to make the best out of the opportunity Amai Mugabe was extending to them.

“The poultry projects Dr Amai Mugabe is setting up will help women to become independent economically if they manage their business resources properly,” she said. “It is good to note that these women will not have problems getting markets for the birds, as this is being taken care of as we speak.

“The current cash shortages will also not affect the women much, as most people here have embraced plastic money through cellphone transacting. Amai Mugabe is the national chairperson of the Women’s League, so she is demonstrating her selflessness by promoting economic independence among her children, so let’s not disappoint her.”

The women were receiving training on how to raise broilers from staffers from Irvine’s and National Foods.

Yesterday’s programme set the tone for the rolling out of the second project after women in the district received the first batch of 1 000 chicks some time ago, which they kept and sold before passing capital to fresh beneficiaries to start new projects.
