Mr Deketeke said Zimpapers had managed to steer its ship despite facing challenges due to the prevailing economic challenges. He said the Zimpapers Group was moving with the times and was working hard to ensure it met the expectations of its various stakeholders in both the print and electronic media.

“Because of opportunities in this country, we are able to do things that will make a change. To other CEOs, I will say it is watching the bottom line that will make you a leader of a successful company. In this environment we need to change that equation to say what can we do to bring about social change and transformation in our nation.”

A fortnight ago, Mr Deketeke was rewarded for being the 2015 top business leader for Print and Publishing companies. Women University in Africa Vice-Chancellor Professor Hope Sadza, who was the guest of honour, challenged women to position themselves for leadership roles saying “it is a calamity not to dream”.

She said successful leaders were workaholics who were committed and having a vision to succeed. “In order to empower women into business leadership, what is required is not only an enactment of new laws or policy, but the desire from both men and women to believe in the leadership of everybody,” she said.

Some of the prominent individuals who received awards included Chitungwiza Central Hospital chief executive Dr Obadiah Moyo, who won the outstanding Hospital and Healthcare leader award, Dr Stephen Margolis of Margolis Holdings was the first runner up in the entrepreneurial leader award with Herentals College’s Mr Innocent Benza scooping the prize.
