Chitungwiza Municipality could have lost over $2 million in a vending and parking deal it entered with Clyna Trading that never materialised. According to documents compiled by suspended chamber secretary Mrs Priscilla Vengesai, under the deal Clyna Trading was supposed to remit 30 percent of the proceeds a month ($500 000) for five years.

The agreement reads: “The deal shall come into force upon signatures from both parties. This agreement shall continue in full force and effect until it is terminated pursuant to the parties mutually agreeing to terminate it in writing.” Mrs Vengesai said she managed the contract. “As I was managing the contract, Mr Tawona Makusha (a director from Clyna Trading) indicated to me that he was not given all the vending and parking sites by the director of Works and Urban Planning Mr Conrad Muchesa.

“He once tried to come to the site and the markets, but was ordered by Mr Muchesa and town clerk (Mr George Makunde) to remove his materials. Until now, there is nothing that Clyna Trading has remitted to council and if the contract had been followed, council could have received at least $2 million. This amount could have gone a long way to paying our employees’ salaries,” she said.

Mr Makunde dismissed the claims in an interview with The Herald on Monday. “The issue was supposed to be raised by council if there was anything of that sort,” he said. Mr Makunde said the company never raised any issues with him.
