The District Development Fund requires more than $5 million to rehabilitate road networks and piped water infrastructure in Mashonaland Central Province, it has been learnt.
This comes as Government moves to improve the lives of people in rural communities in line with its five-year economic blue print, Zim Asset.  Minister of State in the Office of the President and Cabinet, Senator Flora Bhuka, who is in charge of DDF programmes, and some senior Government officials, this week toured various projects in the province to ascertain requirements of each district.

“The purpose of our visit to Mashonaland Central is to visit DDF projects, which are underway and which have not been completed. We also want to identify places that will need financial support, basically targeting DDF roads and DDF bridges.

We are also targeting piped water schemes and clinics, which are being constructed under the District Development Fund. We anticipate that after our visit, we will compile a comprehensive report that we will use to request for resources from treasury and external support agencies which used to work with DDF so that we enhance the lives of the people in the rural areas,” she said.

Sen Bhuka said DDF was mandated under Zim-Asset to ensure that roads were accessible and in good state so that the people in rural areas could ferry their commodities to the markets without difficulties.

“We also need to be given resources so that we can revive some piped water schemes because they facilitate the development of gardens, which provide food for the rural population. We will also want to expand in terms of human resources so that we are able to work efficiently and effectively.

“We also need to revive the base stations, which used to work very well in the communal areas to make sure roads are maintained and making sure that drains are cleared especially after the rainy season,” she said.

She said DDF was working with rural district councils. Among the projects that need funding in Mashonaland Central province are Pote Bridge, which requires $350 000, Kandeya Bridge ($150 000), Hambe Bridge ($680 000), Chahwanda-Chironga Road ($1 260 000), Chiutsa-Kambaza Road ($440 600), Sohwe-Charunda-Hoya ($795 000), and Fume-Mushumbi Road ($1 600 000).
