Dar es Salaam wins world city mobility award

DAR ES SALAAM. — Tanzania’s commercial capital Dar es Salaam is among 10 cities across the world which won the 2017 cities for mobility award in recognition of its Dar Rapid Transit (DART) project, organisers said on Wednesday.

“A new bus rapid transit system serving 200 000 people every day and adding new, lower-carbon engines to the city’s fleet was the secret behind the recognition of Dar es Salaam city,” said a statement by the organisers of the award, the C40 Cities Bloomberg Philanthropies Awards 2017.

The C40 Cities Bloomberg Philanthropies Awards are granted annually in five categories and provides global recognition for cities that are demonstrating climate action leadership.

Since 2013, C40 has recognised more than 40 of the world’s boldest projects, highlighting the critical role cities play as a leading force for climate action.

The statement said Dar es Salaam has been honored among the 10 cities with sustainable projects that represent most ambitious and innovative efforts to shape the world’s future.The award was presented on Tuesday at the C40 Cities Bloomberg Philanthropies Awards 2017, which took place at the North American Climate Summit in Chicago, said the statement.

DART in tackling traffic congestion and high levels of air pollution in Dar es Salaam with over 4 million people, said the statement. — Xinhua.
