CWUZ accountant Wazulu never convicted

gavelHerald Reporter
ON July 11 last year we erroneously published that Commercial Workers Union of Zimbabwe chief accountant Phellistus Wazulu was convicted together with the then MDC chairman Joubert Mudzumwe on two counts of fraud and theft of trust property.

Wazulu was cleared of the said offence although her accomplice Mudzumwe (46), of the MDC formation then led by Professor Arthur Mutambara was convicted and sentenced to 20 months imprisonment of which six months were suspended on condition of good behaviour.

A further 10 months were suspended on condition he restituted CWUZ while the remaining four months were suspended on condition that he performed 140 hours of community service.

Prosecutor Ms Mollyn Mutamangira had proved that Mudzumwe had the authority to withdraw the organisations’ funds from the bank on behalf of CWUZ. According to the State on August 16, 2011 he authorised and approved the withdrawal of a total of US$2 000 on behalf of CWUZ and the money was to be handed over to the organisations’ accounts department.

He did not hand over the money when asked to account for it he alleged that he had given it to arbitrator Percy Shawatu as a bribe to obtain his favours.

Mr Shawatu, however, denied receiving any money in the form of a bribe or appreciation of any form.

On July 10 last year it is alleged Mudzumwe produced an invoice to the accounts department requesting for US$308 which he claimed was for vehicle repairs but investigations showed that he had used the same invoice to claim money before.

The money was to be handed over to CWUZ organising secretary Mr Chamunogwa but the money never reached him.
