BOWLING queen Kerry Craven will not take part in the Zimbabwe Club Champion of Champions tournament which gets underway tomorrow in Bulawayo.
The three-day event is expected to attract most of the country’s club champions, but some of the top bowlers will not be able to make it as they have just come back from the Africa States Bowls tournament held in Botswana last week.

The champions will converge at Bulawayo Bowling Club from September 19 to 21 for one Zimbabwe’s top bowling events.

Craven said she will not be able to make it because she has been away from work for a long time.

“I will not be playing in the Champion of Champions this year, we have just come from the Africa States and have been away from work for many days.

“It is a good tournament and I wish all the players who will be available the best. From Highlands Sports Club I do not think we will have someone playing since we have just come back from playing very tough bowls.

“Derek Robinson and I were two representatives from Highlands (at the Africa States) and we are not going to Bulawayo,” said Craven.

Alexandra Bowling Club will have one bowler, Clive Robertson, in Bulawayo.

Heather Singleton is not available.

The Avondale team will be represented by Debbie Robertson and her husband Colin while Borrowdale Country Club will have Ursula Gripper and Paul Smith.

Meanwhile, Craven has commended the Zimbabwe teams that took part in the Africa States tournament, describing them as perfect fighters.

“The Zimbabwe teams were perfect fighters on the greens, the playing conditions were very tough and tricky. At times it was 33 degrees Celcius but am glad we did an outstanding job. We won all our matches in the Trips.

“What a successful tournament it was as most of the bowlers collected silver medals,” said Craven.

The Zimbabwe Trips team of Craven, Heather Singleton and Ally Dale beat South African side 18-15 to top the log with 12 points.

The Zimbabwe Trips last won gold in 2011 and this year they were successful and won gold.

Zimbabwe were also successful as a team when they clinched teams’ overall silver medal. The men’s Fours team won silver as well as in the men’s Singles section where Terry Bowes represented the country.

The women’s Fours side also have a good story to tell as they won silver though the Singles and Pairs sides failed to grab a medal.
