Harare City Council has submitted a special request to Government for the allocation of foreign currency to companies it contracted to import road emergency plant and equipment to enable it to repair roads before the rainy season.

Most Harare roads are in a bad state and it is a nightmare for motorists to drive around Harare. The onset of rains will make the situation worse for road users because of potholes. Acting Town Clerk Ms Josephine Ncube told council’s Environmental Management Committee recently that some of the equipment had been delivered. Recent committee minutes quoted Ms Ncube confirming that council had approached the Ministry of Finance to seek help in raising foreign currency for the companies.

“The acting town clerk advised that a number of consignments of roads equipment were trickling in. The delivery of the plant and equipment were delayed due to shortage of foreign currency. However, special requests had been submitted to the Ministry of Finance to also allocate forex to contracted companies to enable them to timeously deliver the equipment,” reads the minutes.

This was after the committee raised concern over the delay in the delivery of the equipment. Meanwhile, the committee also expressed concern over the increased number of push carts and parked trucks vending along major roads in the Central Business District.

People selling clothes are now an eyesore especially close to Joina City and Main Post Office in the CBD. The committee reiterated the need to remove the trucks and push carts as a matter of urgency. This, it said, was necessary if Harare City Council was to attain World Class City status and lure investors.

“The acting chamber secretary advised that an inter-departmental meeting had been held over control of informal sector and strategies were now in place to control the informal sector operations at undesignated sites,” reads the minutes.
