Gweru City Council has set aside $1,3 million to service new Mkoba 21 stands as the local authority seeks to increase the city’s housing units from 27 500. Gweru mayor Councillor Charles Chikozho said everything was now in place for work to service the new suburb to start.

He said council prioritised service delivery, as well as reducing the housing backlog in its 2018 budget, with at least three percent of the its budget committed to developing new residential stands.

“If you look at our budget, we have prioritised service delivery and housing,” he said. “For our Mkoba 21 project which is aimed at reducing the housing backlog which stands at about 20 000, we have committed $1,3 million and work will be starting early next month.”

Clr Chikozho said there were over 5 000 residential stands under Mkoba 21, most of them already with owners.

“Most of these residential stands have been taken up and we want to make sure that work to develop the suburb starts as soon as possible,” he said. Clr Chikozho said the council will in 2018 develop another new suburb, Randolph.
