HARARE City Council is set to dismiss four directors using findings of a tribunal that was necessitated by a Government audit, which implicated the senior employees in financial irregularities.

A special council meeting was cancelled at the last minute yesterday. The meeting was supposed to present findings of an investigations it carried. According to sources at Town House, facing the chop are Acting Town Clerk Mrs Josephine Ncube, shortlisted town clerk candidate and human capital director Dr Cainos Chingombe, finance director Mr Tendai Kwenda and Health Services director Dr Prosper Chonzi.

Harare Mayor Bernard Manyenyeni yesterday said the meeting had been postponed because they wanted to “further consult”.
“I agree with just the top part (that the meeting was postponed). The firing of directors umm no such position has been made. Only two people had that report,” he said.

The city management views the whole exercise as a witch-hunt. The audit was instigated by the Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Min- istry. It revealed that city managers continued to earn salaries above the $10 450 cap for the highest earner stipulated by the Government. This, the report said, prejudiced the city over $550 000.

Council might have lost millions of dollars as it has over 40 mangers. The tribunal set up in March was supposed to deliver its findings on the issue of salaries in 28 days. Its term was extended on several occasions, with Mayor Manyenyeni accusing council management of lack of co-operation.
