Competition among bakers forces bread price review

Competition among the bakers has seen a reduction in the price of bread despite the escalation in global wheat prices over the past month.

A visit to several shops in Harare revealed that most bread brands had reverted to the pre-August prices of US$0, 90 to US$1 a loaf.
Zimbabwe’s bread prices went up by 10 percent in August following an 80 percent increase in the global price of wheat.

At the time the National Pricing and Incomes Commission and the Tariff and Competition Commission argued that the increases were unjustified since bread prices then were
already excessive.
