Harare City Council has started cutting down old trees that pose danger to the public and planting new ones, an official has said.
The replacement of old trees in different areas follows recent disasters where old trees fell and damaged property worth thousands of dollars.Council spokesperson Mr Michael Chideme said council was going to plant new trees of different varieties around the city.

“We are replacing the old trees that pose danger to the public. We will plant different varieties but mostly the jacaranda because they are a tourist attraction. We are working with environmental partners to plant the trees. Tomorrow (today) we have a massive tree planting from Maruta Shopping Centre to Mvuradonha along Seke Road. We are planting 1 210 trees on road islands,” he said.
