With the way social media has taken over the communication industry, it is hard to imagine that some years ago Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter did not exist. In the people would wait for long to hear from each other because even e-mails were not that common. Fast forward to today, the tremendous impact of cyber space has given dominance to instant secret messaging and in a nutshell people are a click away from accessing anything.

Despite the world of advantages that come with social media it is proving to be costly and upcoming Christian film “The Conversation” intends to spark debate on the subject.

“The short film seeks to address the issue of internet and social media in the lives of people. It is directed at everyone but is biased towards Christians,” said director and producer Dylan Mafukidze.

It is a collaborative effort among young people based in different church denominations and will premiere at Ster Kinekor cinema in Westgate tomorrow.

Mafukidze said the film was most relevant at a time when people were engaging in what they feel was “innocent fun” online, while accessing despicable material via their computers and smartphones.

“When we were growing up, the church used to teach us how we should handle ourselves in the world. But it seems these days, it is leaving out this different world that is presented by social media. In that world, it is difficult to tell who is born again and who is not and people need education on that,” he said.

He said while social media has revolutionised the way people communicate there was need to start the conversation on its impact on relationships with family, with God and also addiction to it.

“The Conversation’s” trailer is already available online and documents the story of Makanaka, played by former Miss Teen Zimbabwe Clara Matenga.

She is forced to fix burnt bridges after circumstances beyond her control take her off social media.

The 20-minute film is more like a roller-coaster as a series of events unfold. 2013 Star Brite winner Trust Makurumure, former Miss Wold Universities first princess Sibonginkosi Hove, Pastor Sam Nhubu, Prichard Nyandoro and Rutendo Chakanyuka make up part of the cast.
