The Chivi Village Zim-Asset, which was launched recently, has moved into the second phase of establishing infrastructure, with a new secondary school set to be built by the community and and open in January next year.

The project, which is being spearheaded by Chivi Rural District Council chairman Dr Killer Zivhu, who donated 600 bags of cement at a ceremony on Saturday, is set to bring relief to pupils from Chivi South’s Chebvumbi area.

The pupils are walking for nearly 20 kilometres to the nearest Ngundu Halt Secondary School, but the mobilisation of the community and resources by Dr Zivhu towards the building of Chebvumbi Secondary School will alleviate their plight.

The new secondary school is expected to have four classroom blocks and four teachers’ houses, enough for it to start lessons by January next year.

Dr Zivhu said villagers will provide free labour as a way of showing their commitment to the success of Zim-Asset at the village level.

The cement donated by Dr Zivhu will be used to mould bricks and after that builders, from the surrounding villages would be hired.

Dr Zivhu will provide window frames and door frames to the structures.

Speaking at the first meeting for the project attended by chiefs, parents, school authorities, churches and Zanu-PF supporters at the site of the new secondary school, Dr Zivhu said Zim-Asset entailed that communities contribute to development in their areas.

He said the building of the school was step towards meeting the Government target of having nearly 2 000 new schools as part of the Zim-Asset targets.

“Zim-Asset is part of the Zanu-PF manifesto and we must work to ensure that it is a success starting at village level because it is our party programme,” said Dr Zivhu, who is also the Zanu-PF provincial secretary for finance in Masvingo province.
