CHITUNGWIZA Residents Trust (Chitrest) has expressed shock at the untimely death of former Chitungwiza Municipality mayor Alderman Phillimon Chipiyo. Alderman Chipiyo, who died last Friday aged 69 after succumbing to kidney failure, was buried on Sunday in Masvosva Village, Rusape. In a statement, Chitrest acting director Ms Alice Kuvheya described Alderman Chipiyo as a true representative of the Chitungwiza community.

“Chitungwiza Residents Trust is deeply saddened by the untimely passing on of former Mayor of Chitungwiza Municipality, Alderman Phillimon Chipiyo, and joins the Chipiyo family and the entire community in mourning this gallant son of Chitungwiza,” said Ms Kuvheya. He served Chitungwiza council with exception for a period spanning more than two decades as an elected councillor for Ward 19. The residents of his ward consistently elected him because of his people-centred leadership qualities, humility and love for humanity. It was during his last term of office as councillor (2008-2013) that he was honoured by being elected to serve as the Mayor of Chitungwiza, an office he handled with professionalism, dexterity and the decorum it deserves.”

Chitrest said the late alderman will be remembered for his selfless service and serving the municipality with distinction.

“Due to his life of selfless service to the people of Chitungwiza, Alderman Chipiyo’s name will forever be remembered among the names of other great sons and daughters of the Chitungwiza community. We hereby offer our heartfelt condolences to the Chipiyo family, friends and the entire Chitungwiza community on the passing on of Alderman Chipiyo. May his soul rest in eternal peace!” said Ms Kuvheya.
