Chiredzi Town Council has adopted a $4,6 million budget for the 2018 financial year, which mainly targets at addressing poor water delivery and sewer systems.

Addressing a full council meeting, finance chairperson Councillor Samuel Mashonganyika said council intended to install prepaid water meters at all houses. He said the budget would be primarily funded from rate payments.

“Chiredzi Town Council proposes a budget of $4 668 920 for 2018, which would be largely funded from property taxes, water charges and business licences,” he said.

“The inflation level has not been considered in crafting the 2018 budget.

“The budget has been crafted basing on the cost build-up of each service to be provided.”

Cllr Mashonganyika said 13 percent of the budget would be utilised on the improvement of sewer and water delivery systems.

“As council, we have taken note of the Government policy which stipulates that 70 percent of the revenue generated must go to service delivery, while 30 percent goes to wages,” he said.

“In 2018, our employment costs will consume 29 percent, while the balance goes to service delivery. Council proposed capital expenditure of $813 174 from internal resources. This budget will focus on rehabilitation of water reticulation system to areas such as Magwaza and Zava, construction of public toilets, road rehabilitation, a compliant landfill and rehabilitation of sewerage infrastructures.”

On prepared water meters, residents proposed that council should start installing them in areas with uninterrupted water supplies. Chiredzi Residents and Ratepayers Association chairman Mr Jonathan Muusha said residents welcomed the prepaid water meters as they rescued them from fixed water charges.
